20th Century Lanes
champs Cameron Weier & Kara Lieber
Cameron Weier returned to the JBT winner's circle, while Kara Lieber tasted victory for the first time, in exciting Pacific Northwest Conference action at Portland's 20th Century Lanes.
For the second consecutive day, a pattern that proved very
challenging was laid out to test the bowlers, and the ones that kept their cool
and ground out the marks survived to the top 16, where bowlers moved on to our
exciting 'pick yer poison' round, in which the higher seeds chose which opponent
they wanted to play in a 2 out of 3 match. Weier qualified 6th and
got by Sam Burns in round one and Tyler Cruz in round two to reach the final
four. #2 seed Evan Pendergraft made perhaps the boldest pick by going
after Marshall Kent, and Evan had the antidote with a win over Kent, but fell in
the next round to Tyler Stickler. Joining Tyler and Cameron in the final
four were #3 Anthony Douglas and #7 Perry Crowell IV VII.
In single game semifinal matches, Weier beat Crowell and Douglas ousted Stickler to reach the title match. Anthony has been steadily improving and has been knocking on the door of JBT victory, but Cameron was eager to end a long victory drought, as the very talented righty got somewhat overshadowed by Kent and Jordan Plunkett last season. Weier was able to win the game against Anthony for the 8th title of his excellent JBT career.
Tyler Satter led the handicap division after qualifying, and picked his poisons wisely, beating Megan Green and Alan Vancleeve to reach the final four. Other than Tyler, the higher seeds found the lower seeds to be quite toxic, as #10 Lieber, #13 Zoe Mahn, and #12 Craig Dodd all pulled off consecutive upsets to reach the semifinals.
Down to single game matches, Mahn got by Dodd and Lieber beat Satter to set up the title match. Zoe has been on a roll ever since she found out JBT existed last June, but Kara has been steadily improving as well, and this time it was Lieber who came up with the win over Mahn for the first title of her JBT career.
Thanks to everyone who helped create a great turnout- now let's do even better- keep spreading the word about JBT, especially to handicap-level bowlers! And thanks to 20th Century for a great job as always hosting our Tour. Want in on all this fun? Come on out to the next JBT event, it's that simple!
