TENPINS & MORE
champs Stephen Planer & Chris Brown
Stephen Planer and Chris Brown captured JBT titles in exciting NM-TX Conference action at Rio Rancho's Tenpins & More.
TJ Gaudette, the previous day's champion, opened up the scratch division stepladder finals with a 189-160 win over Paul Carper. It looked like TJ's run at a doubleheader win was going to stop in round two, but late opens from points leader Jess Gagliardi gave Gaudette just enough room to come back for a 198-190 win. Gaudette used that momentum to defeat Matt Helmick 219-188 in the semifinal to reach the title match.
Top seed Stephen Planer made the challenging New Mexico Open sport shot look easy in the semifinals, firing 689 and going 3-0 to take over the top seed. He continued to be red-hot in the finals, as the Oklahoma City resident and West Texas A&M collegiate bowler (as is TJ) coasted to a 226-178 win and his second career JBT title.
Brown put on an extremely impressive show in the stepladder finals to capture his first JBT victory. After sneaking into the #4 seed for the finals, he began his climb with a 229-154 win over first-time finalist Ben Stedman. He then roared by Lacey Shelton 241-176, and kept it going with a 216-184 victory over Rebecca Finch to reach the finals.
Top seed Tyler Allen was having his best JBT event of the season and came in as the top seed, but just like the previous day when Marcos Armijo ran the ladder, nothing was stopping Brown, who caught a great look, got some good breaks, and threw plenty of excellent shots as well. he saved his best for last, firing a mid-game nine-bagger en route to a 293-180 win and the championship.
Thanks to the whole crew at Tenpins for another great job hosting our Tour. The most tournament-friendly center in the Southwest hosts the New Mexico Open August 20-22, an adult tournament open to any age bowler, on a pattern similar to the one this event bowled on. JBT takes a weekend off for NMO, so be sure to mark that date on your bowling calendars!
