CANYON LANES
presented by Felix Chac Chuo Farms Inc.
champs Mark Myers & Mark Hugelmaier
Many Marks made a mark at Canyon Lanes, but two Marks made the biggest Mark, as Mark Myers and Mark Hugelmaier captured JBT victories in exciting 'survivor' format action at Morongo Casino's fantastic bowling center.
A big turnout meant a long survivor portion, but that also increased bowlers' chances of surviving, as only one of six bowlers were eliminated on each pair for two rounds. After five rounds in the scratch division, the field was whittled down to three, and in that three-way semifinal match, Myers (225) and Cameron Smith (218) eliminated Victor Berge (196), who still enjoyed his highest career JBT finish.
Both Myers and Smith were forced deep inside to combat the drying lanes, an angle that is usually Smith's bread and butter, but this time it turned out to be the two handed Myers with the better look. After rolling the event's only perfect 300 game just to squeeze into the survivor round, he completed the 8-0 romp through his matches with a 229-190 win over Smith, good for the sixth title of his JBT career.
A whopping 28 handicap survivors were finally carved down to eight, and in that round Hugelmaier ousted Kyle Andrews 218-190, Cortez Schenck beat Steven Acuff 253-163, Kyli Selley eliminated KJ Martinez 236-206, and Dillon Algustoski took down Nikolas Belauskas 235-217.
In the semifinal round, it was Hugelmaier over Selley 233-208, and Algustoski over Schenck 239-209 to set up the title match. In that game, Dillon put up an excellent effort, but Mark continued his career best day with a 237-216 win good enough for his first career JBT title.
Both bowlers earned an extra $25 scholarship for rolling to victory using an EFX performance bracelet, and each earned $300 for the win, thanks to the sponsorship of Felix Chac Chuo Farms, a multi-year sponsor of JBT events. In all, over $2,400 in scholarships were awarded to bowlers of all averages- if you want in on all this fun, pick out a JBT event in the near future and just come on down!
