Shake, Rattle, & Bowl

champs Zach Martinez & Jared Boscarino

Zach Martinez completed a dream weekend, while Jared Boscarino captured a long-awaited first career title, in exciting JBT Arizona Conference action at Cliff Castle Casino's Shake, Rattle, and Bowl.

Our popular 'survivor' format, featuring low-bowler out matchplay after the usual cut, plus a demanding lane condition, created lots of do-or-die excitement in both divisions throughout the center.  In the scratch division, 12 survivors were carved down to six, and in simultaneous matches, Aaron Foshie (210) and Zach Martinez (189) eliminated Labriel Leach (161), while Mark Curtis (187) and Justin Giver (167) eliminated Joe Lewandowski (162).

In semifinal heads-up matches, Foshie beat Givler 268-177, and Martinez ousted Curtis 233-194.  Both bowlers had tons of momentum going into the title match, with Martinez winning his first title the day before, and Foshie averaging over 230 since making a big adjustment after a slow start.  However, in the title game Aaron could not find the look on the left hand lane, and Zach took advantage for a 218-183 win and a doubleheader sweep on the weekend.

Twenty handicap survivors were whittled down to 8, and in that round, Boscarino beat KJ Martinez 205-199, Cortez Schenck beat Derek Iozzio 210-157,  7 year-old Jacob DiGiacomo beat Matthew Lombardi 195-178, and Marina Stever, who absolutely crushed the field in qualifying, continued the domination with a 255-214 win over Brittany Kolatzny.

This created interesting semifinal matches with two of the highest averages (176 & 172) going up against two of the lowest (99 & 61).  In one match DiGiacomo was able to easily beat Schenck 229-184, but the other match was a thriller, with Stever needing a double to survive, but leaving a 4-pin on her second shot for a 220-212 decision in favor of Jared, setting up the title match.

In the finale, DiGiacomo finally appeared to start to tire out a bit, and Boscarino was able to take advantage for a 223-182 win and finally capture the first title of the JBT veteran's career.

Thanks to everyone at Cliff Castle for another great job hosting our Tour.  Over $1,600 in scholarships were awarded to bowlers of all averages age 21 and under.  Want in on the fun?  Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
