20TH CENTURY LANES

champs Daniel Hanson & Samantha Smart

Daniel Hanson and Samantha Smart captured JBT titles in the wrapup to the 2011-12 Pacific Northwest Conference season, in exciting action at Portland's 20th Century Lanes.

Katelyn Norton-Hesser opened up the handicap division stepladder finals with a 237-160 win over Zoe Mahn.  Jordan Heard then blasted the high handicap game of the event in a 289-227 win over Horton.  Nick Bruketta, the previous month's champion at West Seattle Bowl, then edged Heard 212-194, to advance to his second consecutive championship game.

After being tied in round seven, Samantha Smart took over the top seed with the better game eight, and the two remained neck and neck in the title match as well.  A tenth frame open from Bruketta opened the door for Smart, and her tenth frame strike wrapped up a 212-194 win, and the first title of her JBT career.

John Jordan opened the scratch division stepladder finals with a 217-212 win over Cameron Weier.  Jordan then had to take on another returning collegian, college rookie and bowler of the year Marshall Kent, and beat him as well, 213-192.    For beating those two, he earned the right to play a third, Perry Crowell IV, and this time Perry was too much, winning 208-193 to advance to the title match.

Leading all those college all-stars was 15 year-old Daniel Hanson, who took the lead away from Crowell in the final game of matchplay.  Both bowlers ground out the game on a demanding lane condition, and after Perry missed a 10-pin to finish at 201, Hanson needed 19 pins in his tenth to win.  After sparing an ultra-tricky 3-6-9, Daniel then got the 9 count he needed for the thrilling 202-201 win and his second career JBT title.

Smart made it a double-win on the day with a 183-154 win over Correen Lieber to capture the day's Impact Bowling JBT Women's Series event, the second of the season for Samantha, while Lieber almost mathematically wrapped up the Pac NW girls bowler of the year honor.

Thanks as always to the crew at 20th Century for hosting our event, which awarded over $1,600 in scholarships to bowlers of all ages and averages.  Want in on all this fun? Check out our 2012-13 schedule and get ready to come on out to the best under-22 events anywhere!
