ACME BOWLING
champs Tristan Curtis & Sebastian Polhill
On a day filled with exciting stories, Tristan Curtis and Sebastian Polhill picked up titles, but that was only part of the story at Tukwila's Acme Bowling in Pacific Northwest Conference JBT action.
After five games, the field was cut in half for the 'survivor' rounds, where the lowest score on each pair is out, creating do-or-die situations throughout the center. Eventually the scratch field was whittled to eight, and in that round Travis Smart beat Nick Bachteler 247-211, Tyler Stickler beat Arizona's Cortez Schenck 205-193, Curtis beat Quinton Miller 244-165, and Cameron Weier squeezed by Anthony Douglas 179-171. A win's a win, but Cameron's previous win was a bit more dramatic, as he fired a perfect 300 game on the challenging conditions, the only perfecto of the weekend.
Down to four bowlers, Tristan beat Tyler with a big score 266-222, while Weier got by Smart 223-209 to set up the title match between to of the Northwest's best. In the title game, Cameron's back to back opens mid-game turned the match in Tristan's favor, and the 224-203 final score was good for the fifth title of his JBT career. Weier and Marshall Kent deservedly take much of the spotlight in this area, but Tristan has now beaten them both for titles this month!
The handicap field was carved to six after four matchplay rounds, and in that round, Andre Calipes ousted Jaeger Krause 252-226, Nicole Egan beat David Scott 247-167, and Madison Crockett and six year-old Sebastian Polhill put on the match of the day, tying at 216. Needing eight pins to win the tiebreaker, Polhill got seven on his first ball, then barely clipped the remaining pins to advance. He rode that momentum to a 229 next game, winning the three-way match against Egan (who also advanced with 221), and Calipes (whose 217 effort was good, but third-best).
Nicole and Sebastian had a back and forth title match, with both players bowling better in the second half of the game. Nicole was unable to get the spare she needed in the tenth frame, and the result was a 210-204 final score in favor of Sebastian, who becomes one of our youngest JBT champions.
All of the above would make for an exciting event, but it was topped in a big way by Josh Mullen, who went 10-7-5 in PowerBowl to win the jackpot, take home a $1,000 windfall, and finally break the PowerBowl drought which has lasted since March of 2010. Be sure to watch a great clip of the win on our Youtube site.
Thanks as always to the crew at Acme, one of the most spectacular centers we visit, for hosting our Tour. Want in on all this excitement? Check out our schedule, and come on out to the next JBT, it's that simple!
