AMF Peoria
champs Cameron Smith & Cierra Chamot
Cameron Smith reached another big JBT milestone with another win, while Cierra Chamot clutched up for her first win, in exciting JBT Arizona Conference action at AMF Peoria.
A very competitive scratch division stepladder finals opened with current all-conference JBT Bowler of the Year Riley Dempsey doubling to defeat 12 year-old Cortez Schenck 223-215. Smith then edged Dempsey 209-201. In the semifinals, Las Vegas' Jakob Butturff doubled in his tenth, but Cameron countered with a perfect tenth of his own to edge Jakob 241-232 and advance to the title match.
Top seed Kyle King, bowling his first regular JBT event of the season, showed why he is still the dominant under-22 bowler in JBT by leading against the tough field. However, Smith is off to a red-hot start this season and will cleary be challenging for the all-conference crown. He remained in control the entire title match, eventually beating Kyle 235-208 for the championship, the 25th of his career, moving him alone into fourth place on our all-time list, behind only King, Steven Black, and BJ Baker.
Megan Carlson began the handicap division stepladder finals with a 219-214 squeaker over first-time finalist Christian Caron. Michael Chamot and his 85 average then came in and beat Carlson 214-178. Adam Lebbs then defeated Michael 211-195, breaking up the chance at an all-Chamot title match, as Adam advanced to take on Michael's big sister, top seeded Cierra Chamot.
Cierra looked to be in trouble in the title match, as Lebbs started strongly, but the tables turned late in the match, as Adam was unable to mark again after the seventh frame. Chamot still had work to do though, needing strike-spare in the tenth for a tie game. After a great first shot struck, Cierra came up with another strike, stealing the win away 222-212, capturing the first title of her JBT career. Cierra and Cameron earned an extra $25 each for the win courtesy of Bowling Dynamics, a sponsor of all 2011-12 Arizona JBT events this season.
Carlson's top-5 handicap finish was assisted by a 5-game qualifying round good enough to be the top scratch female on the day, but #2 seed Courtney Dutton defeated Megan 189-161 in the Women's Series title match, good for the second of three wins she'll need to qualify for the 2012 Girls' All-Conference Championship next summer.
Thanks as always to the crew at Peoria for hosting our Tour. Over $1,700 in scholarships were earned by bowlers of all ages and averages. Want in on all this fun? Come on out to the next JBT event, it's that simple!
