MIRA MESA
champs Kyle Duster & Brooke Martinez
Kyle Duster claimed a long awaited first JBT title, while Brooke Martinez is suddenly piling on the wins, in exciting Southern California Conference action at San Diego's Mira Mesa Lanes.
Joe Lewandowski threw the ball so good that he won the first game of the scratch division stepladder finals 221-185 over Ben Canfield. Lewandowski then threw the high game of the tournament in a 258-192 win over So Cal points leader Jakob Butturff. Wesley Low then continued his recent roll with a 234-178 win over Lewandowski to advance to another title match.
Top seed Kyle Duster was leading a JBT event for the first time, and the quickly-improving two-hander didn't slow down against the challenge of facing off against Low. Needing a double to shutout Wesley, Kyle stepped up and flushed the two shots, eventually winning by a 221-214 margin for the first title of his JBT career.
Samantha Sellers and Alexis Atkin were the two finalists in the day's Women's Series event, but their first order of business was the opening match of the main tournament's handicap stepladder, won by Sellers 202-194. Kyle McCracken then defeated Sellers, 224-205, and followed with a 233-195 over Secilia Kalvelage to advance to his first title match.
Top seed Brooke Martinez broke through for her first career singles title at Bowlium last month, and bowled great on the tough pattern to earn the shot at another win. Giving 60 pins, she and McCracken engaged in a close match. Both bowlers came up clutch in the late frames, with three straight spares from Kyle, but Brooke responded with a 9th and 10th frame double, just enough for a 211-209 win, and her third overall career JBT title.
In the Women's Series match, Atkin got her revenge, beating Sellers 188-139 for the title, extending her recently acquired lead in the girls' all-conference points list.
