CANYON LANES
champs Wesley Low & Anthony DiPanni
Wesley Low remained unbeatable at Canyon, while Anthony DiPanni remained unbeatable on the weekend, capturing JBT titles at Morongo Casino's Canyon Lanes in exciting Southern California Conference action.
Tre Mitchell began the handicap division stepladder finals with an exciting 226-225 win over Jarred Starr-Moncayo. Trevor Thompson, who led the first four rounds of the event, then defeated Mitchell 228-214. Kylie Shishima then stopped Thompson 230-209 to advance to the title match.
Top seed Anthony DiPanni has been on a roll the last few months, winning the Main Event handicap doubles title with Matt Green, and then winning his first singles title at Palm Springs yesterday. He stayed red-hot here, but had his hands full with the determined Shishima. In a nailbiter finish, DiPanni edged Kylie 203-196 with a tenth frame spare, good for his second consecutive JBT title.
Scores were high in the scratch division all day, and the stepladder finals were no different, as Derek Acuff beat Curtis Lindeman 252-233 to win round one. Cortez Schenck then stopped Acuff 236-208, and followed with a 213-191 win over previous day's champ Bobby Hornacek 213-191 to advance to the finals, which is his ninth consecutive regular-season title match!
Top seed Wesley Low, the champion last year at Canyon, was in danger of missing the finals after six games, but then fired 300-286 his last two games, good for the first 800 Tour-wide this season, as well as only the sixth perfect game Tour-wide this season! It's sometimes tough to get on a roll like that in a stepladder format and have to wait for the title match, but Wesley showed no signs of slowing down, defeating Schenck 258-222 for the title, the 16th JBT win of the current Junior Gold champ's JBT career.
Shishima avenged her loss in the main tournament with a 196-181 win over Ashley Dunn (who had earlier converted the 7-10 split), good for her second Women's Series win of the season.
Di Panni picked up an extra $100, while Schenck and Hornacek split $100, as champs of the Weekend Warrior competition, with the top 10 combined finishers over the weekend earning valuable bonus points. Harley Sweigart won the day's Super Bowl prop bet contest, guessing 4 of the 5 questions correctly, and having the closest final score prediction of 27-10 Seattle.
Thanks as always to the crew at Canyon for hosting our event. Want in on the fun JBT provides for all ages and all averages? Check out our schedule and come on down, that's all there is to it!
