AZTEC LANES
champs Wesley Low & Israel Ramirez
Wesley Low added another title to his collection, while Israel Ramirez tasted JBT victory for the first time, in exciting Southern California Conferene action at Aztec Lanes, on the beautiful San Diego State University campus.
Cortez Schenck opened the scratch division stepladder finals with a 192-178 win over Brandon Wanders. Billy Dacanay then stopped Schenck (using Cortez' black Hammer to fight the drying lanes!) 208-164. Low then beat Dacanay 204-144 to move on to the title match.
Anthony Cando had dominated the tournament, leading since game four, while Low had to rebound from just barely making the cut to get here. The rebound continued in the title match, with Wesley cruising to a 243-189 win. It's the 21st title of his JBT career, matching his 21 JAT titles- an impressive dual resume for the incredible Californian.
Daniel Koble, an Aztec Lanes employee who rolled the high game of the day with 286 earlier, began the handicap division stepladders with a 193-169 win over Matthew Green. Andrew Chan then threw a great game to stop Koble 239-217. Chan's next game was almost as good, but Israel Ramirez turned in one of the best of the day against him, winning the semifinal match 273-230 to move on to the title game.
Top seed Terri Plaza is also an Aztec employee (one watched the desk while the other bowled their qualifying squad!) It looked like that Plaza was going to avenge Koble's loss, but things turned dramatically in the final frames, when Ramirez caught a big double to make Terri fill 19 in the tenth to win. Plaza did get the mark, but a 6-count on the fill gave Ramirez the breathtaking 232-230 win- what a way to win your first career JBT title!
Randi Speiler piled on yet another girls' win this season, topping Renee Gentry 207-189 for the day's Women's Series title.
