BOWLIUM

champs Bobby Hornacek and Kyle Reed

Bobby Hornacek and Kyle Reed earned JBT victories in hard-fought and exciting Southern California Conference action at the Bowlium in Montclair.

The scratch division competed in the nervewracker format, where after qualifying, 2-game matches that are tied 1-1 go immediately into a one-shot rolloff instead of a game three.  Top seed Russ Oviatt easily led the qualifying round, but he couldn't get past his ASU teammate Ben Canfield, who beat him two straight.  The round of eight also saw the best match of the day, as #2 seed Hornacek outlasted #10 Matt Zweig 10-9 in the third rolloff.

Down to four bowlers, Ben beat Austin Thompson, and Hornacek (eventually) beat Eric Hatchett to set up the title match.  The match between the two talented bowlers turned into a grind, understandably so given the tough pattern and the fact that it was the end of their third tournament in two days, making it somewhere around their 20th game of the weekend.  In the end, Bobby was able to win two straight from the always-tough Canfield, winning the tournament for his 5th career JBT title.

Handicap used our classic format, and James McGough won round one of their stepladder finals with a 198-171 win over Ryan Galland.  Kyle Reed then stopped McGough 216-168, and followed with a clutch double to oust newcomer Bryce Rhambo 210-199 in a terrific semifinal.

Top seed Secilia Kalvelage looked great all day, taking over the lead from Miguel Meraz in game six and not looking back.  However, the title match between two people very familiar with each other (they bowl the same league at Simi) came right down to the final frame.  After Kyle finished, Secilia, needing a mark to win, left a 6-10 and just barely missed the spare, giving a stunned Reed a long awaited first career JBT title.

Ashley Dunn kept on rolling in the JBT Women's Series, beating archrival Randi Speiler to earn her 6th girls title of the season already!

Huge thanks to Scott and the incredible Bowlium team for hosting one of our favorite weekends of the season.  Want in on all the fun?  Just come on down to our next event, that's all you have to do!
