MIRA MESA LANES

champs Wesley Low & Renee Gentry

The great Wesley Low won once, but Renee Gentry one-upped him by winning twice, in exciting JBT Southern California Conference action at San Diego's Mira Mesa Lanes.

Bowlers competed on a tough Cheetah pattern in the treacherous 'pick your survivor' format, where bowlers competed in low-bowler-out matches, with who's playing who determined by the highest-seeded bowlers themselves.  Twelve scratch survivors were carved down to four, and in those semifinal matches, Kirk Chui beat top seed Austin Thompson 235-178, while Wesley Low ousted Bobby Hornacek in a nearly identical 234-178 margin.

Chui has been searching for that elusive first scratch title soon, and will get it soon, but it wasn't meant to be against the veteran Low this time, as Wesley cruised to a 215-173 win, and the 18th title of his excellent JBT career (peace, dude).

Sixteen handicap survivors were whittled down to four as well, and in those matches, Dustin Yauney stopped veteran Marguerite Evans 206-180, and newcomer Renee Gentry eliminated TPC runner-up Abby Franklin 217-194, to set up a title match of bowlers looking for their first JBT title.

The title match was an exciting back and forth affair, and a clutch tenth frame double from Gentry forced an 18-count from Dustin to win.  Unfortunately for Youney, he missed his spare, and Gentry came away with the 203-192, winning her first career JBT title.

The winning wasn't over yet for Renee, as she then proceeded to knock off top seed Ashley Dunn 240-215 in a very well-bowled Women's Series title match, completing a dream half-hour of JBT bowling for the talented JBT rookie!

Big thanks to the terrific staff at Mira Mesa for yet another fantastic job hosting the Western United States' best under-22 bowlers.  If you want to be a part of it, all you have to do is check our schedule out and come on down.  Any age and any average- it's as simple as that- see you soon!
