KJ Martinez swept the weekend, while Bex Boyko finally broke through for a win, in exciting Arizona Conference action at BRC Camino Seco in Tucson.
In scratch division semifinal matches, top seed Bryan Van Sickle defeated fellow Tucson bowler Cam Lamson 224-192. In the opposite semifinal, KJ Martinez, who led most of the qualifying round, stopped Sweden's own Sven Majeske 216-210 to advance to his second straight title match, having won the day before.
The previous day's win was KJ's first singles scratch win after a hugely successful handicap career, and this time it was the talented Van Sickle who was looking to break through for his first win. Martinez wasn't about to let that happen though, as he rolled a confident game to beat Bryan 220-199 and sweep the weekend with his 12th career JBT title.
In the handicap division, three semifinal matches saw Celeste Valdez eliminating Zach Rapp 224-208, Joseph Metzer stop Phillip Sauve, who made back-to-back top 5 finishes on the weekend 237-211, and Bex Boyko finally escaping a string of 4th place finishes with a 234-216 win over Paul Colyer.
In the resulting three-way final game, Boyko threw a wonderful 240 game to claim the title, while Valdez finished in the runner-up spot with 224, and Metzer settled for third with 187. It's Bex's 2nd JBT title, the first coming back in 2013.
Valdez wasn't done bowling for the day, though, as she still had to take on New Mexican Vanessa Romero for the day's Women's title. It was a split-filled match, but in the end Romero prevailed 164-148 for the day's girl's title.
