champs Ben Canfield & Destiny Johnson
Two JBT veterans picked up early-season titles to wrap up the opening weekend of the 19th season of JBT Arizona Conference action at Shake, Rattle, and Bowl.
Bowlers competed in our 'pick your survivor' format, where semifinalists competed in low-bowler-out matches that were determined by the higher qualifying seeds. In the scratch division, ten semifinalists were carved down to four. In the semifinal matches, Nick Pollak defeated Harley Sweigart 210-173, while Canfield escaped with a 190-182 win over Bryan Van Sickle when Bryan suffered a tenth frame open.
The title game appeared to get much closer in the second half when Pollak started stringing strikes and Ben was stopped by a 4-9 split. However, Canfield calmly converted the split, regaining the momentum and eventually winning the match 223-205, good for the 19th title of his excellent JBT career.
In the handicap division round of six, Tarik McMaster eliminated Dante Rohe 267-188, Anthony Villalobos beat Sebastian Polhill 217-174, and Johnson ousted Jerod Walker 246-215. In the resulting three-way semifinal, Villalobos (253) and Johnson (221) outscored McMaster (214), setting up the final game.
Destiny remained in control the entire title match, rolling her second 200+ game of the day in a 253-190 win over Villalobos, good for her third career JBT title. She didn't stop there either, rolling another 200 scratch game in a 203-171 win over Jasmin Martinez to also win the day's Women's Series event!
Thanks as always to the crew at the beautifully remodeled Shake Rattle and Bowl for hosting our Tour. Want in on the most fun tournaments for bowlers of all averages? Just check out our great new schedule and come on down to the next JBT event!
