AZ DOUBLES
champs Derek Acuff & Eric Hatchett, and Matt Wachter & Madison Holman
A team about as veteran as you can get, and a team of rookies, each found success in Phoenix, capturing titles in the JBT AZ Doubles Classic, hosted by AMF/Bowlmor Christown.
Jerod Walker and adult partner Raymond Johnson opened up the scratch division stepladder finals with a 235-194 win over Cristian Roque and Kyle Duster. Josh Demick then teamed with all-time JBT girls title leader Bryanna Caldwell to defeat Walker and Johnson 216-176. Derek Acuff and Eric Hatchett then turned the tables with a 235-207 win over Caldwell and Demick to move on to the title match.
The top seeds were Randy Cote, a multi-time JBT champ whose Racks on Racks Pro Shop is a major JBT sponsor, and Bryan Van Sickle, perhaps the best bowler on Tour that has yet to win a title. He and Randy were eager to erase that anomaly, but the veteran team of Acuff and Hatchett, with 40 titles and 20 years of JBT experience between them, and still JBT eligible, were not about to let that happen. A late string of strikes keyed a 236-208 win for Hatchett and Acuff, good for the 26th and 16th wins of their JBT careers respectively.
Zach Rapp and Kyle Ponzo escaped the opening match of the handicap division stepladder finals with a 198-196 squeaker of a win over Destiny Johnson and Mathew Adragna. Sebastian Polhill and Aaron Coleman then teamed for a 192-173 win over Ponzo and Rapp. The semifinal match came down to the final ball, as Genevieve LaLonde got the 19 pins in the tenth she and her son Mark Sauve needed to eke out a 151-150 win over Polhill and Coleman, to advance to the title game.
Madison Holman, who has only bowled a few JBT events, teamed up with rookie Matt Wachter, and they bowled like vets all day, cruising to the top seed. They saved their best for last, teaming up for a 280-187 win over Sauve and LaLonde, cruising to their first career JBT titles.
Huge thanks to all the adults and alumni who came out to bowl with today's JBT kids, as well as to Pat Cook and the team at Christown for a great job hosting us for the 20th consecutive season. Want in on all this excitement and fun? Just check out our schedule and come on down!
