AZTEC LANES

champs Kyle Reed, Ashley Wilcox, & Caleb Rothstein

A sold out day of action at the San Diego State student union saw some new faces emerge as JBT champions in terrific Southern California Conference action at Aztec Lanes.

Joe Grondin, who made a great run just to make the first cut, won round one of the scratch division stepladder finals 245-184 over Eric Hatchett of Las Vegas.  ASU bowler Russ Oviatt then stopped Grondin 219-204.  Kyle Reed then escaped from Oviatt 212-211 on a short fill ball from Russ to advance to the title match.

After defeating one tough customer in Oviatt, Reed then had to face 73-time champ Cortez Schenck, who is on a roll even by his lofty stamdards.  However, Schenck started to lose his look in the title game, while Kyle stayed collected and put the match away by the late frames.  After an inconsequential open, the 223-204 final result was good for the third title of his JBT career.

Samantha Potter won round one of the 8-bowler handicap finals with a 213 game that beat Garrett Sulzer (167) and Andrew Yzaguirre (175).   First time finalist Caleb Rothstein then fired 242 to defeat Potter (206) and Rieley Ulanday (226).  Caleb's 217 semifinal effort was again enough to win, as he ousted Tim Hill (212) and Jeff Rodda (203) to advance to the title match.

Top seed Ashley Wilcox enjoyed her best JBT event by far, cruising to the top spot with big numbers all the way.  However, she ran into a buzzsaw in Rothstein, whose mid-game five bagger wrapped up a 232-212 win and his first career JBT title.

Wilcox's excellent day continued in the girls' event, as she captured the #2 seed behind Renee Gentry, then defeated her good friend 209-183 for the day's girls' title.

Huge thanks to Jamie Spector and the SDSU staff for making this event possible and helping it go smoothly.  Want in on this fun for all ages and averages?  Just check out our schedule and come on down, that's all there is to it!
