CERBAT LANES
champs Cortez Schenck & Elijah Melchor
Two veterans remained on impressive winning streaks, capturing JBT titles in exciting dual conference action at Kingman's Cerbat Lanes.
Joe Grondin opened the scratch division stepladder finals with a mulligan-aided 226-225 thriller over Keith Fung. Harley Sweugart then blasted 11 strikes in a 279-209 big win over Grondin. The next match was a classic as Harley and Russ Oviatt burned through mulligans (each bowler started the day with two), with Oviatt finally emerging with the 269-258 win.
Top seed Cortez Schenck saved all four mulligans he earned for the title game, but a fast start and a letdown from Russ after the previous match's excitement meant he never had to use one, and he cruised to a 247-191 win for the 74th title of his JBT career. It was also the 20th win of the season for Schenck, tying Jakob Butturff's record in that category.
The first round of the handicap finals was also a squeaker, as Samantha Potter nosed out Tim Hill 202-200. Elijah Melchor then stepped in and does what Elijah Melchor does, beating Potter 246-198, and Kaylee Am-Khong 26-183 to advance to the title match.
Those two wins made it eleven straight wins in stepladder finals, an amazing accomplishment. Top seed Samantha Conti had been brilliant all day long, but she joined the previous eleven who didn't have an answer against Elijah. Despite some stumbles, Melchor won the match 223-203, for his 12th straight stepladder win, and 5th career JBT victory.
Amanda Atkin and Kaylee Am-Khong played yet again for a girls' title, and this time Amanda came out on top 197-170 for teh day's women's win.
