CLIFF CASTLE CASINO

champs Nick Devlin & CJ Todeschi

It was a different state but the same result for Nick Devlin, while CJ Todeschi claimed victory for the first time, kicking off the 20th season of JBT Arizona Conference action at Cliff Castle Casino's Shake, Rattle, and Bowl.

KJ Martinez began a climb up the scratch division stepladder finals by surviving a tenth frame open in a 225-224 escape over Russ Oviatt.  Now on a freeroll, he beat Keith Fung 266-190, and followed with a 238-170 win over Cortez Schenck to reach the title match.

Top seed Devlin, last season's Pac NW Bowler of the Year, is down in Arizona for school at ASU, and showed the exact same skills here that dominated the northwest last year.  A late string of strikes shut out KJ, and the 247-218 final score was good for the 10th title of his JBT career, becoming just the 37th bowler in JBT history to reach that elite level.

Scores were high in the handicap division stepladder finals, beginning with Clifford Robbins' 246-233 win over Amanda Ely.  Mojave rising star Matt Baker then stopped Robbins 248-206.  The semifinal match turned out to be an all-time great one, as Ryan Perry's 249-232 scratch win was also a 273-262 handicap win (!), advancing Ryan to his first title match.

Top seed CJ Todeschi's big claim to JBT fame prior to this event was a $1,000 PowerBowl win this summer, but he showed his quickly improving bowling by leading this event, and then calmly rolling to a 219-181 win, and his first career JBT title.

Bree Vargas is doing some traveling this season, and that may be bad news for the rest of the girls on Tour, as she earned the top seed for the day's Women's Series event, and then beating Rachael Berg 208-194 for the day's girl's title.

Thanks as always to the team at Cliff Castle for hosting our event.  Want in on all the fun for all ages and averages?  Just check out our schedule and come on down, that's all there is to it!
