GOLD COAST

champs Cortez Schenck and Ariana Zandi, handicap runner-up Jacob Childress

Cortez Schenck and Ariana Zandi picked up JBT titles to wrap up the Mojave Conference regular season, in exciting action at Gold Coast.

Cortez had to climb the ladder for his 75th career JBT victory, beginning with a 191-190 thriller over Ryan Lee.  Schenck then got past Kennison Andrews 232-197, and followed with another thriller, doubling in the tenth for a 207-205 win over Sergio Torres to move on to the championship game.

Top seed Harley Sweigart found a look on the left side of the lanes that no other portsider could find, leading to an impressive top seed position.  However, an unusual open in the late frames created a hole for Harley he could not dig out of, and in the end Schenck cruised to the title by a 246-176 margin.  His 21st win of the season breaks the all-time record for most titles in a season, previously held by Jakob Butturff.

Sam Espiritu won round one of the 8-bowler handicap finals with a 225 game that eliminated Tim Hill (181) and Rachel Csanyi (171).  Jacob Childress' bug 252 then stopped Espiritu (221) and Phillip Sauve (213).  Childers was good again in the semifinals, firing 228 to beat Timothy Kessler's 212 and Kyle Gilbert's 196, to advance to the title match.

Ariana Zandi was extremely impressive in her JBT debut, re-taking over the lead in the semifinals and rolling to the #1 seed.  She didn't slow down a bit in the late-night title game, stringing strikes for a 236-198 win over Childress, earning her first career JBT title.

Rachael Berg and Stephanie Zavala played an entertaining girls title match, and a tenth frame open proved fatal for Stephanie, allowing Berg to escape with a 180-178 win and the day's girls title.

Thanks as always to the team at Gold Coast for a great job hosting our Tour.  The field is now set for the Mojave Invitational, featuring $1,000 for first place in each division!
