GOLDEN PIN LANES
champs Cortez Schenck & Dante Rohe
A bowling center that has seen decades of historic moments hosted the most historic accomplishment in our 20 year history, in exciting JBT Arizona Conference action at Tucson's Golden Pin Lanes.
In the scratch division, "a matter of time" finally became "now" as Cortez Schenck climbed the stepladder for his record-breaking 64th career JBT title. As with most ladder climbs, he dodged a few bullets along the way, beginning with Bryan Van Sickle needing to strike to win in the tenth frame of the first match. He didn't get the hit, and Schenck survived 248-230. Round two was a strike-fest on the fairly high scoring pattern, and Cortez out-struck Kyle Duster 257-235. The ride appeared to be ending against Nick Devlin in the semifinals (who had shot 299-823 in the middle of the event), but a late-falling 10-pin gave Schenck the strike he needed for a 223-203 win and a trip to the title match to try for the record.
Top seed Keith Fung had been brilliant all day long, but the wheels came off in the second half of the title match. It devolved into a coronation by the late frames, and when Schenck finished off the 247-161 win, the JBT had a brand new all-time career titles holder, with the sky still the limit for the talented young man.
Dante Rohe, in the middle of a red-hot run himself, also won four matches in the stepladder finals to take the day's handicap crown. He began with a 206-177 win over Tyler Hedges. Dante then got past Mathew Adragna 213-184, and followed with a 238-221 win over Phillip Sauve to reach the title game.
Top seed Rachael Berg, like Fung, had been brilliant all day, but also like Fung, picked a bad time for a bad game, in the title match. Rohe poured it on, eventually winning 262-177, for the 5th title of his JBT career, as well as third since November.
It was another battle of Las Cruces in the Women's Series, as Adel Wahner beat Vanessa Romero 235-165 for the day's Girls title.
