MIRA MESA LANES

champs Julian Zavala & Joseph Queller

Two first time champs opened up a brand new season of So Cal Conference JBT action, in an exciting event hosted by San Diego's Mira Mesa Lanes and sponsored by MSC.

Noah Dotterman, a first time scratch finalist, won round one of the stepladder finals with a 220-208 victory over Austin Thompson.  Julian Zavala, also in his first scratch finals, then beat Dotterman 190-170.  In the semifinals, Zavala beat Joe Grondin 218-204 to advance to the title match.

In a day of firsts, nothing was 'first' about Cortez Schenck except his position in the standings, as he grabbed the lead after game five and never looked back.  Zavala didn't back down in the title match though, and when Schenck left a 10-pin on his first shot in the tenth, Julian needed only a high count to wrap up the win.  Zavala flushed a strike to earn his first JBT title with the 215-197 final score.

7 year-old Taylor Bronson opened the first round of the 8-bowler handicap stepladder finals with a 207 game that eliminated Ashley Wilcox (185) and Kylie Shishima (188).  Another youngster, Joshua Abigania, then fired a second round 214 to oust Bronson (190) and Carlos Perez (165).   #2 seed Dante Villa then stepped in and blasted 224 to eliminate Abigania (190) and Arizona traveler Mathew Adragna (167) to advance to the title match for the second straight year at this event.

Top seed Joseph Queller was brilliant in his first JBT event to grab the top seed.  Unfortunately for Villa, it was deja vu all over again, as he couldn't keep up with Queller's pace and settled for the runner-up spot, as Joseph's 223-188 win was good for the first title of his JBT career.

The new season's Women's Series got off to an exciting start as Shishima and Julia Frias tied the title match at 170.  Frias came through with a 10-8 win in the ensuing rolloff to earn her first girls title in her rookie event.

Thanks in part to MSC, our great hosts at Mira Mesa, and a great turnout from newcomers and veterans alike, over $2,000 in scholarships was awarded to a wide array of bowlers of all ages and averages.  Want in on all this fun?  Just check out our schedule and come on down!
