SOUTH POINT
champs Brian Monnette & Tyler Hedges
Brian Monnette and Tyler Hedges closed out 2015 on a winning note, capturing titles in exciting Mojave Conference action at the South Point Bowling Plaza.
Wesley Low, fresh off his dominating victory in the Main Event, began the scratch division stepladder finals with a 230-161 win over 2014 Main Event champ Adel Wahner. Monnette then did something nobody else was able to do all week- beat Wesley, in a great 247-235 match. Brian got the same result in the next match but in a totally different way, grinding out a 159-148 win over Cerell Cardines to reach the title game.
Top seed Paul Colyer is looking to grab that first scratch title in his final season, and bowled brilliantly all day, but did not have the answer against Monnette. Brian re-found the look he lost in the semifinals, and the 235-188 result was good for the 7th title of his JBT career.
Kelley Johnson of Utah exploded for a 268 scratch game in round one of the handicap division stepladder finals, good for a 291-198 handicap win over Ryland Pimentel. Dominic Olivares then took out Johnson 202-188. The next match was a thriller, with Olivares' tenth frame open causing heartbreak for him and relief for Tyler Hedges, who advanced 206-198 to reach the title game.
Marguerite Evans put on one of her career-best performances en route to the top seed. However, she struggled a bit in the title game, and Hedges took full advantage, rolling to a 227-202 victory, which is already the third title of the talented ten year-old's JBT career.
Wahner was also the top qualifier for the day's Women's Series event, and she defended that seed in teh title match, beating Wyoming bowler Claire Turner 219-184 for the day's girls' title.
Thanks to the whole crew at the amazing Plaza for all their help in making Main Event week a spectacular one! Including this event, over $35,000 in scholarships were awarded to all ages and averages! Want in on all this fun? Just check out our website and come on down!
