AMF CHRISTOWN
champs Cortez Schenck & Elijah Melchor
Elijah Melchor pulled off a rare ladder-climb, but it was Cortez Schenck grabbing the headlines and tying our most historic record, in exciting JBT Arizona Conference action at AMF / Bowlmor Christown.
Paul Colyer began the scratch division stepladder finals with a 217-171 win over Keith Fung. Kirk CHui then defeated Colyer 199-174. KJ Martinez then blasted a 268 game to cruise by Chui's 163 and advance to the title match.
Schenck had lapped the field, leading all eight rounds, but Martinez looked locked in on the finals pair, and has a historic resume of his own, leading all-time handicap titles and grabbing a pair of scratch wins as well. That two bowlers with such great resumes can come from the same school, let alone city, is always amazing to us. In this title match, Martinez lost the great look he had, and while Schenck never got comfortable either, he was able to grind out a 182-141 win. The victory is the 63rd of his JBT career, tying Kyle King for the all-time titles record with his 63rd win. Where will the record be broken? Stay tuned!
Melchor blasted through four tough opponents to capture the day's handicap title. He began with a 214-208 squeaker over Destiny Johnson. Elijah then beat Tyler Hedges 234-198, and followed with a 217-186 win over Aaron Coleman to reach the title game.
"Climbing the ladder" has been a rare feat lately, but Meclchor finished the job with a 231-216 win over top seed Mark Sauve. It's the 3rd title of Melchor's JBT career.
Amanda Atkin continued her dominance of this year's Women's Series with a 208-193 win over top seed Cierra Chamot for the day's Girls title.
