champs Cortez Schenck & Phillip Sauve
Two JBT veterans added another major to their collections, capturing titles at the Best In The West tournament, hosted by AMF Chandler Lanes.
Three first-time finalists opened the handicap division stepladder finals, with Zackary Koterman's 205 edging Josh Brown's 202 and Marco Lerma's 175. A tough second match saw Andrew Thomas defeat Koterman 219-215. Phillip Sauve then turned the tables on Thomas with a 224-194 semifinal win to advance to the title match.
Top seed Alex Seng, boosted by a 298 scratch game early in qualifying, dueled with Sauve for the lead all event long, with Alex nabbing the lead after matchplay. However, Sauve had the edge in experience, with both of his previous JBT titles coming in majors (AZ invitational and NM Open). He used that experience to his advantage, blasting one of his highest games of the tournament in a 260-223 win over Seng, good for his 3rd career JBT title, all majors!
Schenck climbed the ladder for his unprecedented 84th title, beginning with a 234 game that defeated Jacob Merki's 222 and Keith Fung's 197 (earning Keith the rare and coveted 6th place plaque for the second straight year). Schenck then beat John Newton, who earlier shot the only 300 of the tournament, 183-166, and followed with a 225-203 win over Kyle Duster to reach the title game.
Top seed Nick Devlin had been brilliant over the two day grind on two different patterns (including one pattern on each lane Sunday), while Schenck seemed to be struggling a bit with his game, yet still had the ability to do just enough to get by. Both bowlers saved some of their best for last in the title game, where Cortez came up with an exciting 248-235 win, good for the title and another major on his gaudy resume.
Big thanks to Chandler for another great job hosting our Tour. Want in on the fun for all ages and averages? Just check out our schedule and come on down, that's all you have to do!
