CANYON LANES
champs Cortez Schenck & Connor Steelmon-Hill with U17 and Girls winners Solomon Salama & Michaela Buhain
A super day of bowling saw Cortez Schenck sweep the weekend, while Connor Steelmon-Hill showed no quit in winning his first, in jam-packed JBT So Cal Conference action at Canyon Lanes.
Ryan Lee began the scratch division stepladder finals with a 226-147 win over Kennison Andrews. Solomon Salama then stopped Lee 233-208 to move on to the title match. His opponent was Cortez Schenck, who had taken over in the semifinals to cruise into the lead. In a low-scoring finale, Schenck escaped with a 195-178 win for a sweep of the weekend and the 86th title of his unparalleled JBT career.
Dawson Reese escaped the first round of the handicap stepladder with a 222-215 win over Justin Barriga. Michaela Buhain then halted Reese's run 218-206 to move on to the title match. Connor Steelmon-Hill qualified 30th and last in the huge 75-bowler field for the semifinals, but that didn't faze him, as he began the semis with the high game of the tournament to help him vault all the way to the top seed. Buhain had led all day, but had a bad reaction to some medicine which clearly hindered her at the end of the long day. Steelmon-Hill remained strong and finished off the comeback with a 227-196 win over Buhain to earn the first title of his JBT career.
Buhain looked much stronger in the Girls Scratch finale, in which she beat Megan Carpenter 199-156. Salama earned the day's U17 crown with a 183-145 win over Kevin Banaag. The '21' jackpot was won for the second straight day, as Zach Greim got 1 pin down after getting to 20, to earn the $100 bonus.
The big stories of the day were the So Cal Conference record 110 bowler turnout, and the fantastic scholarship prize contributions from MSC, Inc., and Priority Girl Magazine, which all combined to boost the day's prize fund near a whopping $4,000! Thanks to Canyon for hosting us as always, and thanks to everyone for attending! You should be here too- just check out our schedule and come on down!
