AZ DOUBLES

champs Derek Acuff & Harley Sweigart, and Ryan Perry and Jay Perry

Two teams took interesting paths to victory, capturing titles at the AZ Doubles Classic, hosted by AMF Christown in Phoenix.

JBT veteran Kyle Duster and recent alum Mark Myers began the Baker-format scratch division stepladder finals with a 201-180 win over the similarly constituted Jake Tucker and Josh Mullen.  ASU bowler Chase Nadeau and former ASU bowler (and 23 time JBT champ) Ben Canfield then defeated Mark and Kyle after a long mid-game delay 212-187.  The delay was unfortunately a sign of things to come, as Ben and Chase then got past all-time JBT greats Dallas Leong and now-PBA star Josh Blanchard 187-175 in another delayed match, to move on to the championship.

Harley Sweigart and Derek Acuff both had partners with last-minute issues, so they teamed up for the event, and the all-southpaw combination proved to be dominant, leading through most of the day.  Another lane issue forced to the title match to me moved mid-game, as well as hand-scored- an unfortunate circumstance for sure, but we all know bowling is as much mental as it is physical, and Harley and Derek seemed to have the advantage on both sides, cruising to a 257-181 win and the title over an understandably weary Nadeau and Canfield.  It was Harley's 17th, and moves Acuff to within one win of his stated goal of 30 career titles with win #29.

The father-son team of William Robbins II and III got a W in round I of the handicap finals, besting Gavin Holter and AJ Imperial 200-175.   Ryan and Jay Perry then began a charmed climb up the rest of the stepladder, starting with a 171-166 squeaker over the Robbins when III couldn;t get the XX in the X.  Against Christian Caron and season-1 JBT bowler Matt Villegas, Matt couldn't get the double he needed, and the Perrys advanced with a 226-218 win.

Top seeds Abby Franklin and Bex Boyko had led since game two of the tournament, but found themselves in a tough match for the title.  The match seemed to turn when Jay missed a 5-pin in the ninth.  However, one more twist was in store when Franklin also missed a 5-pin in the tenth, and the result was a 187-182 win for the shocked Perrys, good for Ryan's second career JBT title.

Thanks as always to the team at Christown for hosting this annual classic event.  Want in on all this fun for all ages and averages?  Just check out our schedule and come on down!
