SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA INVITATIONAL
champs Kyle Duster & Maikayla Villa; Marquan Rivers, Zach Greim, Kaylee Am-Khong
Kyle Duster and Maikayla Villa earned $1,000 scholarships as champions of the JBT Southern California Conference Invitational Tournament, hosted by San Diego's Mira Mesa Lanes.
Bowlers competed in five tough games on two different lane patterns, with the top 16 moving on to triple elimination matchplay. The talented scratch field was carved down to four bowlers by round eight, and in that round Duster eliminated Kyle Reed, while Marquan Rivers stayed alive with a win over Solomon Salama. Duster eliminated Salama in the next round, to set up a Duster-Rivers one game take all title match.
Kyle had trouble with his spares all day, but his powerful strike ball was able to pull off the rare feat overcoming the sparemaking snafus, and his win over Marquan earned him his 18th career JBT title and big $1,000 payday.
Round eight also saw four handicap bowlers still surviving, and in that round Zach Greim eliminated Lathan Chin in a thrilling rolloff, while Villa, still with only one loss, eliminated Lawrence Buhain, setting up a scenario where Zach had to beat Maikayla twice to win the title.
A close first game came down to the tenth frame, and when Greim didn't strike, Villa claimed victory, and her first JBT title was a big one, good for the $1,000 top prize and major win.
Kaylee Am-Khong contonued to be red hot at the right time, capturing her third Priority Girls Scratch Invitational win this season, this time beating Katelyn Abigania. The win was worth a bonus $400 prize, while Abigania earned $200. Rivers capped off his fine day with a win over Salama in the U17 finale, worth a bonus $200 to push his earnings to $700 on the day.
Big thanks to the team at Mira Mesa for their usual outstanding job hosting us, as well as everyone involved in a great So Cal season! The top 20 season long point scorers now move on to the TPC in late July to compete for over $20,000!
