PAC NW INVITATIONAL
Mary Sicard, Piper Chalmers, Kierra Wilcox, Ashton Yamasaki, Logan Winchell, Bud Sicard
Ashton Yamasaki and Kierra Wilcox earned $1,000 top scholarship prizes as champions of the JBT Pacific Northwest Conference Invitational Tournament, hosted by Paradise Lanes in Tacoma.
After five qualifying games, bowlers competed in nervewracking triple-elimination matchplay. Both divisions saw a similar pattern, as four bowlers remained in round eight. In that round in scratch, #12 Yamasaki eliminated top seed Bud Sicard, and Liam Hardman eliminated #11 Piper Chalmers, leaving Ashton with two losses and Liam with only one loss (each to the other). It was no surprise, then, that Hardman won the next game, forcing a fifth game between them for the championship. In that finale, Yamasaki came out on top to complete the dream weekend, becoming the 50th bowler to reach 10 career JBT titles, and adding another $1,000 to his career earnings. His terrific home stretch almost caught him up to Mac Kaurin's season points total, but Mac was able to hang on for scratch Bowler of the Year honors.
In the handicap division's round eight, #6 Mary Sicard eliminated previous day's champ Haley Johnson, and Logan Winchell gave Kierra Wilcox her second loss. Kierra backed into a bye with three remaining, and watched as Winchell eliminated Sicard in third place, setting up a scenario where Kierra needed to beat Logan twice to take the title. Winchell had numerous chances to put her away, but Wilcox hung tough, scraping out a win in the penultimate match, setting up one final game with not only the Invitational title but Bowler of the Year on the line. Both bowlers performed well under the pressure at the end of a very long day, but when Logan couldn't get the double in the tenth he needed, Kierra claimed a long-awaited first career JBT title, $1,000 top prize, and the result also meant that Tai Garrett hung on over Logan for Bowler of the Year.
Piper's excellent day was boosted even more with the Girls Scratch title, beating top qualifier Sienna Stoner for that honor, helping her coast to Bowler of the Year. U17 went to Bud Sicard with a win over Liam, which was enough to pass Kaurin for Bowler of the Year in that subdivision.
Huge thanks to everyone at Paradise for another first-class hosting job. Over $5,900 in scholarships were awarded to all skill levels and ages- wow! Top season long performers now move on to the Touring Players Championship, competing against the best Tour-wide at the climax of the JBT season!
