Best In The West
Josh Molloy, Nicholas Harnit, Cameron Coleman, Andrew Guba, Gyrus Alo; Kloey Kielich
Andrew Guba and Cameron Coleman picked up JBT major titles, capturing the 2023 Best In The West event, hosted by Cactus Bowl in Tucson.
After fifteen games of matchplay on three different patterns, the top six in each division advanced to a bracket finals. In the scratch division first round, #6 Keith Ylvisaker got past #3 Daryus Alo, and #4 Josh Molloy beat #5 Jason Gootzeit, both in 2-0 sweeps. The next round also featured sweeps, as top seeded Guba came in to beat Ylvisaker, and Molloy upset #2 Amarr Bryant, to set up the title match. In the clash of two veterans, Josh won the first game, but Andrew won the second, setting up a final game for the title. Guba left no doubt, starting with the front six and then cruising to the 234-212 win, good for the ninth title of his JBT career (and eighth of the season!), coming with $829 in total scholarship earnings.
The handicap finals featured all sweeps, as they must have exhausted their dramatic finishes through the grueling and closely contested matchplay rounds. To open the finals, #3 Coleman beat #6 Alex Rosenblum in two close games, while #5 Evelynn Bollea bested early leader #4 Zackary Evans. The top two seeds then came in and could not maintain their momentum going, as Bollea stopped #2 Nicholas Harnit, and Coleman upset top seed Joshua DiGangi, to set up the final. Cameron had been cramping in earlier matches, but looked to be improving in the matches against Evelynn, and kept up the good scoring pace to sweep two games and earn his second career JBT title, first major, and the $800 first place scholarship prize.
The usual simultaneous Girls Scratch and U17 subdivisions were held with boosted prize funds as well. El Paso's Kloey Kielich defeated Kaitlyn Hammer to win the Girls event, while in a sibling match between two brothers both rapidly improving, 13 year-old Gyrus Alo squeaked past big brother Daryus for the title. A well-bowled title match is rarely anticlimactic, but it may have been the case, as Gyrus earlier fired 297-833 in the consolation event for the high game and series of both the tournament and his career by far!
Lots of big thanks for this (and all) JBT events: the team at Cactus for being amazing hosts, the folks at VisitTucson.com, Mark Kerr and the Tucson USBC for spreading the word, the AZ National Guard for a major prize fund contribution, our title sponsors IAM Bowling and the Brands of Brunswick, and especially the tireless Matt Hunt, director of the Cactus Youth program, for turning the center into a shrine for the kids, with pennants on the masking units, award banners everywhere, and the beautiful Best In The West banner shown below. A whopping $7,458 was awarded to the sellout field, wow! Want in on all this fun and action for all ages and skill levels? Just check out our schedule and come on down!
