BEST IN THE WEST
champs & finalists
Juan Canez and Jakob Enright wrapped up the Arizona Conference regular season with big wins at the Best In The West tournament, hosted by the team at Cactus Bowl in Tucson.
Every game of the event was matchplay, and it took fourteen games to carve the sold out fields to the top 6 for a finals bracket. In the scratch finals, #3 Brendan Bobersky defeated #6 JR Barczyszyn, while #4 Canez eliminated #5 Amarr Bryant. The top two seeds then entered, and top seed Dylan Donahue stopped Bobersky, while Canez pulled off the upset over #2 Jason Gootzeit. The best of 3 finals was tied one game a piece, and in the final, Canez remained in control, winning the match for the first title of his JBT career.
In the handicap finals, #3 Enright beat #6 Cameron Peterson, while simultaneously #5 Paityn Gaines beat rookie #4 Brandon McIver Jr. Both Paityn and Jakob, having red-hot springs, pulled off upsets over the top two in the next round, with Enright beating #1 Christopher Charron, and Gaines beating #2 Miramontes, to setup the final. In the title match, Enright's magical 2025 continued, as he poured on the strikes for a two-game sweep over Gaines, good for the fifth title of his JBT career.
Kendall Bollea kept rolling with an earlier win over Gaines for the Girls Scratch title, while Payton De Merritt led the early rounds and beat Gootzeit for the U17 win. Huge thanks to the whole team at Cactus for their usual great hosting job, and nearly three decade partnership with JBT. The field is now set for the 2025 Arizona Invitational, with top players fighting for over $6,000 in scholarships.
