BIG ROCK CASINO
champs Justin Medina and Nathan Hughes
Justin Medina and Nathan Hughes captured titles in the JBT SW's annual visit
to beautiful Big Rock Casino Bowl in Espanola.
The stepladder finals opened with Josh Arceo defeating 15-time JBT SW winner
BJ Baker by a 226-205 margin. Bill Grant then had just enough to beat
Arceo in round two 182-179. The semifinal match was all Medina, as he
confidently defeated Grant 245-215 to advance to the title match.
Top qualifier Tom Anderson was leading a JBT SW event for the first time, but
struggled to maintain the same pace he had set earlier in the title match.
However, just when Medina appeared to have the tournament wrapped up, he threw a
4-6-7-10 split, and flagged all the pins on the spare ball to make it a match
again. Now needing a double to win, Tom threw a good ball but left a fast
8, and the result was a 193-192 win for Medina, good for his second career JBT
SW title.
The handicap division finals opened with Susan Kurzeka rolling a 209, good
enough to defeat efforts from Mike Romero (179) and Breanna Salazar (181).
The scores went way up in the next match, with Kyle Gaines sparing in the tenth
for a 253 game, just edging Jamison Spam's excellent 248 game, and also
defeating Kurzeka (203) to advance to the semifinal match. In that semi,
featuring three Big Rock league bowlers, Brandon Abeyta rolled a 224 to defeat
Gaines (214) and Darryl Shadoan (201) to advance against top qualifier Nathan
Hughes.
Hughes, a JBT regular quickly climbing the point list, easily led the
tournament, but as all bowlers know, it's a whole new game once you get to the
title match. Hughes responded beautifully though, rolling his best game of
the day in a 278-222 win over Abeyta, good for the first title of his JBT SW
career.
Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2006 JBT SW NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a
guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division. Top
season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2006 JBT SW Touring Players'
Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per
division!
Thanks again to Jeff Pearce and his staff for another wonderful visit to Big
Rock. 65 entrants shared in over $1,400 in scholarships awarded. Please continue to
help spread the word about the terrific benefits
of bowling JBT SW events!
