BOWL EL PASO
champs Stephen Gaucin and Carlos Mendez
We all know the slogan "Don't mess with Texas", but the folks at
Bowl El Paso were a bit more specific, saying "Don't mess with El
Paso", as local bowlers captured titles in exciting JBT SW action at Bowl
El Paso.
Justin Medina opened up the stepladder finals with a 212-168 win over Bill
Grant. Medina then followed with a 208-139 decision over Jerod Florez,
setting up a brother-vs.-brother matchup against #2 seed Jeremy Medina.
This time big brother knew best, as he defeated Justin 224-198 to reach the
title match.
Top qualifier Stephen Gaucin had a great look all day on the forgiving
conditions, and was able to defeat Medina 225-191 to capture the 5th title of
his increasingly impressive JBT SW career.
In the handicap division, Carrie Wiggins fired a big 242 in round one of the
stepladder finals, defeating fine efforts from Jennifer Fast (224) and Wendy
Shelton (200). In round two, Carlos Mendez trumped that with an even
bigger 259, defeating Wiggins (223) and Anthony Tripi (175). The semifinal
match went Mendez' way as well, as his 220 bested Darnelle Spears' 204 and Sara
Vargas' 196, advancing him to the title match.
Carlos' last event was also a success, partnering with Bailey McFarland to
win the TX-NM doubles event, but top-seeded Charlie Elliott presented a tough
challenge this time around. A well-bowled battle by both players ended
heartbreakingly for Charlie when his tenth frame open allowed Mendez to just
mark for the win. Carlos spared a 2-4, and won the match 225-219, good for
his third career JBT SW title.
Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2006 JBT SW NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a
guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division. Top
season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2006 JBT SW Touring Players'
Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per
division!
Thanks again to everyone at Bowl El Paso for another great visit to this
historic center. 79 entrants shared in over $1,700 in scholarships awarded. Please continue to
help spread the word about the terrific benefits
of bowling JBT SW events!
