CACTUS BOWL

champions Theo Douthit & Joey Gordon

Theo Douthit and Joey Gordon captured victories in exciting JBT SW action at Cactus Bowl.

A Tucson-record 134 entries were whittled down to 8 in each division after eight qualifying games.  The scratch division finals opened with points leader Kevin Saunders rolling a 220 to defeat Taylor Brennan (183) and Texan Stephen Gaucin (195).  In round two, Dan Delano, making his second straight finals, shot a big 245 to eliminate Saunders and Zach Simon, both with 202 efforts.  BJ Baker then continued a red hot spring with a 277 game to oust Delano (206) and Grant Sudbeck (192), who threw the event's only 300 game, during the qualifying round.

The title match featuring Baker and top seed Theo Douthit featured our two most prolific active lefthanders, and they both lived up to that billing with plenty of strikes.  However, Douthit, the defending champ at this house, had the bigger strings for a 257-238 win, the 7th of his outstanding JBT SW career.

The handicap division needed a rolloff to determine our #8 seed, which Kevin Millard won over Jordan Bell.  Millard then remained red hot with a 244, defeating a fine 238 from Barbara Lampkin, but it wasn't quite enough as they both fell to Matt Aguilar's 248 in round one.

David Price then made a successful return to JBT action with a 265 game, eliminating Aguilar (194) and Brandon Culp (214).  Price cooled off to 191 in the semifinal match, and watched as Allie Ijams and Michael Kenny waged a great battle, with Kenny doubling in the tenth for a 234-226 win to advance to the title match.

Top seed Joey Gordon pulled off the rare feat of leading the event wire-to-wire, and he didn't slow down one bit in the title match.  Kenny rolled a fine 217, but Joey came up with a big 256 to capture his first career JBT title.

Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2006 JBT SW Arizona Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2006 JBT SW Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Thanks to Dale Schnell and everyone at Cactus for another great job hosting our event.  ALmost $3,000 in scholarships were awarded to the huge field.   Please continue to help spread the word about the terrific benefits of bowling JBT SW events!
