CANOGA PARK BOWL

champs Kevin Valmonte & Louis Barragan

A very high scoring day at Canoga Park Bowl saw Kevin Valmonte and Louis Barragan come up up with victories in exciting JBT SW Southern California Conference action.

Give our scratch division bowlers a few extra boards to hit, and they can put up big numbers, and some of the biggest numbers in our 360-tournament history were put up at Canoga.  Jared Lawrence finished game three with a 6-count on his fill ball for an even 800 series, only the 7th in our history- and his lead lasted for a few minutes, as Brian Carmichael finished up an 820 opening set, 3rd highest all-time, en route to grabbing the tournament lead at +462 after the 8-game qualifier.  In all, 19 bowlers averaged better than 220 in the qualifying round- yikes!

The stepladder finals opened with first time JBT bowler Brian Pepper doubling in the tenth frame to eliminate Steven Black, our all-time titles (37) and money (over $35,000) leader, 236-224.  Valmonte, the #3 seed, then stepped in and fired the last seven strikes for a thrilling 267-252 win over Pepper.  In the semifinal, Valmonte was able to maintain the momentum with a 246-214 win over Lawrence to advance to the finals.

Carmichael came up with a fine 224 game, but it felt like 160 with this scoring pace.  Valmonte opened with seven of the first 8 strikes to put the match away early.  The final result was a 256-224 win, good for the second title of Kevin's JBT career.

The handicap division stepladder finals opened up with another newcomer enjoying his first taste of JBT action, as David Pengelley fired a big 262 to advance over Tyler Boscarino (217) and Eddie Sayles (187).  In a tightly contested match two, Samantha Meyers posted a 240 to get by Shane Lien (194) and Pengelley (235).  The semifinal match belonged to Kyle DeCew, who put up a big 257 to defeat Meyers (197) and Arozona's Justin White (210) to reach his second career title match.

Top qualifier Louis Barragan had opened the day with a 286 scratch game to take the early lead, which he lost a few times during the event to White, but regained for the finals.  Louis took advantage of his first title match opportunity, opening with a turkey and continuing on for a 220-198 victory, the first of his JBT career.

Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2006 JBT SW Southern California Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2006 JBT SW Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Thanks to everyone at Canoga Park for a terrific first visit to their center.  101 entrants shared in over $2,100 in scholarships awarded.  Please continue to help spread the word about the terrific benefits of bowling JBT SW events!
