LEISURE BOWL
champions Sam Cuevas & Travis Gudelj
Sam Cuevas started the new season the way he ended it,
while Travis Gudelj continued his dominance at Leisure, in exciting JBT SW
action to open the New Mexico-Texas Conference's season.
In the scratch division, Justin Taylor ended New
Mexico's last hopes for a scratch title this event, as he eliminated Jeremy
Medina in round one, 255-181. Taylor then faced Stephen Gaucin, and after
a spare in the first ran the next nine strikes for a dominant 279-200
victory.
In the semifinals, Cuevas doubled in the tenth frame to put away
Taylor, 243-222. It was hard to give Taylor the third place plaque after
rolling 756 in the stepladder, which followed a 771 set in the semis (he was
last to make the cut), but even that much wasn't enough to get by the confident
Cuevas.
Sam had gained much of that confidence by rolling twelve
perfect shots for a 300 game in qualifying, the only perfecto of the season so
far. His last JBT SW appearance was a win in last season's NM-TX
Invitational, but he'd have to get by top-seeded William Haverland to make it
two wins in a row. Both bowlers rolled an excellent game, however bad
carry plagued Haverland as it had in a few previous title matches in a
row. After back-to-back solid-9 pins on the left hand lane, William
watched Cuevas throw the first strike in the tenth, forcing him to double for
the win. Haverland carried a light hit in on the first ball, and then
delivered a dead-flush shot on his next ball, but a solid-8 refused to fall, and
a stunned Cuevas emerged victorious by a 235-228 score. The dramatic win
was good for the third title of his JBT SW career.
Juan Romero, the #8 seed, opened the stepladder finals
with a 221 game that was good enough to defeat Jared Jaramillo (207) and Brandon
Dye (189). In round two, Romero's 213 effort was enough to squeak by Eric
Kear (207) and Brittany McComb (185). In the semifinals, Romero came up
clutch again, as his 227 beat Alex Giddings (206) and Josh Arceo (192), to
advance to the title match.
Top qualifier Travis Gudelj's only other victory
came at Leisure, and he bowled with the confidence of a champion in the title
match. Romero's brilliant run finally came to an end as Travis remained in
command and won the match 238-191, good for his 2nd career JBT SW title.
Big thanks to everyone at Leisure Bowl for a fantastic
weekend of competition! Be sure to watch the video of the finals on the
Videos page of the website.
