LEISURE BOWL
champs Justin DeDera & Kyla Casuas
Justin DeDera added another title to his collection, while
Kyla Casuas became one of our youngest champions ever in JBT SW action at
Leisure Bowl.
The scratch division struggled on some very demanding
conditions, with only two bowlers averaging over 200 in the qualifying
round. Eventually the scratch division was whittled down in the Survivor
format to three bowlers. A Justin was guaranteed to win at that point as
Justins DeDera, Taylor, and Medina all advanced to this round.
In three-way matchplay, DeDera, the #2 seed going in, led
with a 200, while Medina rolled a 194 to best Taylor's 191, eliminating the top
seed, and setting up a title match between him and DeDera.
Medina, still looking for his first JBT SW title,
struggled during the title match, while a fast start by DeDera allowed him to
coast the rest of the way. The end result was a 213-153 win, good for the
fifth title of his JBT SW career.
In the handicap division, twenty-one qualifiers were
whittled down to six in some very exciting and tense Survivor-style matches. In
the round of six matches, Ashley Belden ousted top-seed Alex Yoder 208-169;
Delta Bauer, the last bowler in the cut, defeated Zachary Barnard 264-162
(despite Zach's unreal conversion of the 7-8 split hitting the LEFT side of the
7-pin); and Jeremy Baca just got by Kyla Casuas 200-194. However, since
that left three winners, the highest losing score also advanced from that round,
giving Casaus a second chance she wouldn't squander.
In the round of four, Baca easily defeated Belden
202-147, and Casaus just edged Bauer 201-195, and each bowler advanced to play
each other again, but this time for the title.
Nine year-old Kyla, already the second bowler with an
average under 100 to make the title match this season, showed no fear in taking
on Baca again with a large crowd cheering on both bowlers. Unfortunately
for Jeremy, he struggled on the drying conditions, while Kyla filled frames when
she could converting both a 7 and 10 pin along the way. The result was a
blowout 178-136 win for Kyla, good for the first JBT SW title of her career.
Big thanks to everyone at Leisure Bowl for a fantastic
weekend of bowling fun!
