champions Josh Arceo & Sara Vargas
Josh Arceo continued his dominance in Roswell, while Sara Vargas dominated
the field for her second straight event, in exciting JBT SW action at Town &
Country Recreation Center.
Both divisions used our nerve-wracking Survivor format, eliminating the
lowest scorers round by round until only one player remains. In the
scratch division, Bill Grant and Sam Cuevas earned byes for having the top 5
game qualifying scores, each averaging well over 220. However, Cuevas was
eliminated in the round of four (with a Dutch 200) and Grant was eliminated in
the round of three, leaving Justin Medina and Josh Arceo standing.
Arceo moved up to the scratch division this year, and had already had good
results, but really exploded at Town & Country, with the extra confidence
from winning the handicap division event here last year. The title match
was a huge struggle, but in the end Arceo held off Medina 169-151 to capture his
second career title, and first in scratch.
In the handicap division, Mark Mares led the qualifying round, and held his
own just fine through the early survivor rounds. In the round of six,
however, he fell to Vargas 218-198. while Amanda Johnson eliminated Joseph Palma
205-201, and Kelsey Jones defeated Kara Casaus 210-208. However, Kara's
208 was the high losing score, so she also moved on to the round of 4.
In the semifinal matchups, it was the out-of-towners upsetting the locals, as
Johnson eliminated Jones 213-203, and Vargas defeated Casaus 257-227 to advance
to the title match.
Top qualifier Vargas won the last JBT event she entered in Bernalillo, and
remained unbeatable in Roswell, defeating Johnson 237-188 for her second career
title.
Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2006 JBT SW NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a
guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division. Top
season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2006 JBT SW Touring Players'
Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per
division!
Thanks Brian Casaus and everyone at Town & Country for an
absolutely awesome job of spreading the word around Roswell, and helping to put
on a great event. 71 entrants shared in over $1,400 in scholarships awarded. Please continue to
help spread the word about the terrific benefits
of bowling JBT SW events!
