ANTELOPE LANES
champs Kevin Saunders & Kyle Frederick
Two top seeds enjoyed a dominant day en route to landmark titles in exciting JBT action at Antelope Lanes.
Kevin Narciso just snuck into the finals by one pin, and took full advantage of that break with three wins in the scratch stepladder. He began with a 213-187 win over Jeremy Medina. Kevin followed with a 235-191 win over Forrest Holland, who made a great comeback from a foot injury last month, and then beat Greg Garbera 242-177 to reach the title match.
Top seed Saunders had dominated the qualifying rounds to a degree we rarely see, leading every round to eventually amass a 200-pin lead over his nearest competitor. That can often be a paradoxically difficult situation, as the whole day of domination is boiled down to one match. Not today, though, as Saunders stayed in control of the match with his friend and ASU teammate, eventually winning 215-173, good for his 10th career JBT title, only the 12th bowler to reach 10 or more titles for their career.
Rebecca Bodinet, a finalist at this center last season, opened the handicap division of the stepladder finals with a 205-160 win over red-hot Matt Erb. Gino Salaverria then defeated Bodinet 187-171, then followed with a grindout 189-171 win over local favorite Zac Sugahara to reach the title match.
Frederick had been near the top of the leaderboard all day, and was able to win a tough match against Salaverria 217-211, good for the 4th title of his career.
84 bowlers competed in the event. Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT Arizona Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division. Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!
Big thanks to Antelope for hosting our events every year. Over $2,400 in scholarships was awarded. Want in on the fun? Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
