SO CAL DOUBLES

champs Josh Blanchard, Rhino Page, and Holly and Matt Emery

75 teams shared in over $2,700 in scholarships awarded in the JBT So Cal Doubles Classic, held at Mira Mesa Lanes.

After seven grueling games of generally high-scoring competition, the field in each division was whittled to five for the exciting alternate-shot stepladder finals.  The handicap finals opened with the team of Brenden Lou and Steven Lanning defeating Lisa Marine and Oran Houck by a 211-197 margin.  In round two, Bill and Kaitlin Mayall defeated Lou and Lanning 212-196, before a thrilling semifinal in which Matt Emery struck all three times in the tenth for a 227-226 victory for him and daughter Holly over the Mayalls, setting up the title match.

Another father-daughter team, Arno and Brittany Kolatzny, easily claimed the top seed, with both partners well over average for the day.  However, despite an incredible split conversion by Brittany mid-game, the Emerys were able to maintain the semifinal momentum, winning the title match 214-204 for their first JBT titles.

The scratch division opened with the junior-junior team of JR Monteith and Daniel Watanabe defeating ASU teammates Brian Makan and Phillip Tanvas 204-182.  Tanvas had the high game of the event with a perfect 300 during qualifying.  The righty-left combo worked again in game two, as JR and Daniel ousted Anthony Stevenson and Gary Burke (Gary rolled a huge 814 in the semis) 225-197.  In the semifinals, defending champions Devin Bidwell and mason Sherman eliminated Monteith and Watanabe 220-214 to reach the title match yet again.

Top qualifiers Josh Blanchard and Rhino Page were quite a story even before the title match.  Blanchard was looking for his third consecutive JBT title personally, but the current Junior Team USA star had a mediocre day, averaging only 205 on a very high scoring condition.  Not to worry though, because his partner Rhino, a former Team USA star, had one of the best individual days in JBT history.  His scores in order were 249-290-225-279 (that's 1043 for 4), 279-278-289 (for a sick 846 in the semis), for an 1,889 7-game total, a 269 average!!!  The team's +665 7-game total is also a JBT record.

After being denied the week before with a different partner, Rhino was not to be denied this time, as he and Josh cruised to a 267-214 win over Bidwell and Sherman.  The win was the 7th of Josh's JBT career and Rhino's 3rd.

75 teams competed in the event, and we hope everyone who attended had a great time, and will spread the word about the great benefits of bowling JBT.   Every junior who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT So Cal Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Big thanks to Mr. John Balla everyone at Mira Mesa for another terrific job hosting our event.  Over $2,700 in scholarships were awarded.  Want in on the fun?  Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
