LEISURE BOWL

champs Justin Medina & Olivia Silva

Olivia Silva made it a two-peat to open up the season, while Justin Medina began where he left off last season, in exciting Survivor format JBT action at Albuquerque's Leisure Bowl.

After the normal cut to the top half of the field, an equal number of bowlers were put on each pair, with the low score out on each pair after each game, creating do-or-die situations all over the place.  Eventually, the scratch division was whittled down to four bowlers.  In those semifinal matches, Medina ended Jerod Florez' back-to-back dreams with a 231-167 elimination, while Andy Byer and Nathan Shock ended up with a tie at 170, forcing a one-shot rolloff, which Byer won 9-7 to advance to the final.

The title match was just as close.  After Byer finished with a strike on his fill ball, Medina needed strike-9-spare to tie.  Medina flushed the first shot, then just tilted out a solid-9 for the double and the win, 202-191, for his fourth career JBT win.

The handicap field was carved down to six Survivors, and in those matches, Carlos Abeyta eliminated Joseph Palma 207-164, Trevor Pedroncelli eliminated Jason Gill 198-178, and William Yoder ousted Olivia Silva 199-179.  However, Silva had the highest losing score (by one pin), so she advanced to the round of four- when things go right, they really go right sometimes!

In the semifinal matches, Silva got her revenge on Yoder 259-175, while Abeyta got by Pedroncelli 195-187 to reach the title match.  Miss Silva put on an incredible show in the finale, rolling her high game of the day for a 265-194 win over Abeyta for her second consecutive title to open the NM-TX season.  No handicap bowler has opened a year with two in a row since 2000-01.

Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Big thanks to Judy Sybertz and everyone at Leisure for a terrific job hosting our event, which awarded over $1,600 in scholarships!
