Josh Blanchard made it a four-peat, Christian Jensen broke a long drought, and Brandon Surko tasted victory for the first time with Patrick Hunt's help, in excitnig JBT Mojave Doubles action at South Point.
After seven team games of doubles competition, both divisions were whittled down to the top five for exciting Baker-format finals action. The scratch division opened up with the adult-junior team of Brian Weyrauch and Mel Stene falling to Eric Rubin and Chris Ingram 237-226. Ingram and Rubin put up a nice 225 in the next round, but it wasn't enough as ASU teammates Kevin Saunders and Kevin Narciso posted an even bigger 244 to advance. In the semis, Saunders and Narciso beat Ricky Overton and Mike Wright 211-159 to reach the title match.
Top seeds Blanchard and Jensen had been the most consistent team all day, with each partner seeming to come up with a big game to support a partner's lower game. They had more than enough left in the title match, defeating the Kevins 238-136 for the win. The victory was Josh's 8th (and JBT record-tying 4th in a row personally), and Christian's 7th (and first since May).
In the handicap division, Bryce Hackeny and Layne McDonald opened up the finals with a 186-170 win over Courtney Dutton and Susy Monteith. McDonald and Hackney then squeezed by round two with a 177-170 triumph over Alesha Pannier and Cameron Peck. Surko and Hunt then ended Bryce and Layne's fine run 225-276 in the semifinals to advance to the title match.
Top qualifiers Matt and Larry Raagas had taken over in the middle rounds to nab the top seed, and appeared headed for victory with a double in the 8th and 9th frames. However, needing just count in the tenth, Matt's first ball unfortunately fell off into the channel, forcing him to get nine on the second shot for the win. Crushingly, a 6-10 stood on the second shot, and a stunned Surko and Hunt claimed a 191-190 win, their first JBT titles each.
87 teams competed in the event, and we hope everyone who attended had a great time, and will spread the word about the great benefits of bowling JBT. Every junior who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT Mojave Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division. Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!
