OASIS LANES

champs Christian Jensen & Samantha McFarland

Christian Jensen continued his incredible spring tear, while the handicap division crowned its youngest champ ever, in exciting JBT action at Oasis Lanes.

Justin Medina recovered from the previous day's crushing title match loss by opening the scratch stepladder with a 204-179 win over Chris Weyrauch.  Jensen then stepped in and beat Medina 210-192, and got on a roll in the semifinals, defeating Stephen Gaucin 266-177 to reach the title match.

William Entsminger had his best JBT event of his career on the demanding pattern laid out for the day, including a 290 during qualifying.  However, Christian's title match experience came through in the finale, and he threw the front five strikes before cruising to a 212-195 victory.  The win was the 12th of his career, and an amazing 5th since February!

Sophie Diaz, a two time winner this season, opened up the handicap stepladder with a squeaker, a 204-201 win over Cassie Bacoccini.  Samatha McFarland, who by the way was BORN in the 21st century, then engaged in a very entertaining battle with Diaz, as both bowlers bowled way over average, with McFarland eeking out a 236-234 win.  The semifinal match that ensued was certainly one of the most unique in JBT history, as Kristina Casaus stepped in, making it the first battle of TWO six year-olds in a stepladder match.  Neither bowler was intimidated by the huge vocal crowds cheering for them both, and McFarland came up with a 210-192 win to advance to the title match.

Top seed Carlos Mendez, the "old man" of the bunch, was leading for the second straight day, on two very different lane conditions, and though the El Paso crowd rooted for them both, the emotional vote was decidedly in Samantha's favor.  When a solid-10 stopped Carlos' comeback bid, Samantha wrapped up a 219-183 win and her first JBT title.  McFarland thereby became the JBT's youngest champion ever, displacing four previous 8-year-old winners, including Samantha's sister Bailey!  In a situation where Carlos had every right to be cranky, having lost two title matches in one weekend, Mendez instead hoisted the delighted champ on his shoulders, creating one of my personal all-time favorite JBT moments.

Everyone who finished in the top 10 qualifies for the 2007 JBT NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Big thanks to Mr. Bobby Stives and everyone at Oasis for a great job hosting our event.  Over $1,500 in scholarships was awarded to the field!
