PARKWAY BOWL
champs Kyle King & Shayne Huntley
Kyle King made a huge leap into the Bowler of the Year picture, while Shayne Huntley joined his little brother as JBT titlists, in exciting Southern California action at Parkway Bowl.
Matthew Jones and Dan Bodinet engaged in a strikefest in the first round of the stepladder finals, both saving their one mulligan for late in the game. However, they both struck out from the fifth, so Bodinet ended up losing a crusher 258-245 with a mulligan still on the bench.
Danielle Schilling then defeated Jones 21-184, and caught fire with a 267-164 win over Justin Lou, to advance to the title match.
Top seed Kyle King had dominated most of the day, and started the title match strong, while Danielle caught a sudden case of 9-itis, starting the match with 7 straight nine counts, including a mulliganed 9-count! The end result was a 258-204 win for King, his fifth career title, and a huge statistical boost for him in the So Cal points race with only one regular season event remaining.
The handicap stepladder was filled with fascinating storylines that had a huge impact on the Bowler of the Year race. In round one, Brian Castelloe, who already has two wins this season and has never lost a stepladder match, improved his record to 6-0 with a 230-186 win over first-time finalist Brandon Turner.
In round two, Brian took on points leader Justin Basom, and Castelloe buried him with strikes, winning 267-173. The top 5 was useful to Basom, but the loss meant Brian could edge pretty close to him in points if he kept winning.
The semifinal match seemed pre-destined, as James Hawkins Jr. stood in Castelloe's way next. Despite a phenomenal season tour-wide, James has no So Cal win, and two title match losses- both to Castelloe and both by less than a mark. This match proved to be the best of their three, as Brian's mark in the tenth forced James to double for the win. Hawkins flushed the first shot, and his second was just as good, but a 7-pin remained standing, and the crestfallen Hawkins fell to Castelloe again, 236-230, and Brian advanced to the title match.
Top seed Shayne Huntley has had his own frustrations in stepladder matches, and has had to watch his little brother Caymann win twice this year- one of those two by beating none other than Shayne! This time, Caymann wasn't there, and Shayne was fresh off a great week at Mark Baker's bowling camp, and the improvement was very visible as the determined Huntley rolled an overpowering game, defeating Castelloe 251-212 to capture his first title. Brian nonetheless upped his stepladder record to 8-1 and reaches 2nd in the all-important points list.
