TOWN & COUNTRY
champs JR Monteith & Joseph Palma
JR Monteith and Joseph Palma captured titles in exciting JBT New Mexico-Texas Conference action at Roswell's Town & Country Entertainment.
The scratch division was treated to the debut of the new Mulligan format, where bowlers piled up one do-over to use anytime they want for every strike they roll in game one. Monteith took full advantage of this by blasting an 11-strike 280, ensuring that everyone would be looking up at him for quite a while. He then backed up that with 279 and 244 for an 803 start that would have him leading comfortably if he had zero Mulligans.
The scratch finals opened with two mulligan-less bowlers, as Andy Byer defeated Bill Grant 239-177. Byer then defeated Sam Cuevas, who had two mulligans but still couldn't keep up, 244-215. Shane Peck then needed to only use one Mulligan to get by Byer 244-215 to advance to the title match, setting up an all-California finale in New Mexico!
It was fascinating all day to watch when bowlers would use their mulligans, but the title match setup, with Peck's 6 mulligans versus JR's ten, promised to be a shootout, as they could each recover from many bad shots. It was Peck who proved to have the better look through the match, which forced JR to start to use up his once seemingly inexhaustible supply of do-overs. When Shane finally ran out of his mulligans in the eleventh frame, he had racked up a 265 score, forcing one mark in three attempts by JR to wrap up the win, which he got without a problem for a unique 267-265 win and his 3rd JBT title.
The handicap division finals was the Joseph Palma show. He opened with a 184-135 win over Diego Lucero, then brought the scores up with a 240-214 victory over fellow Roswell bowler Dakota Corbell. Palma kept turning it up in the semis, beating Seth Jaramillo 278-200 to reach the title match.
Nathan Hughes had been lurking near the top of the leaderboard all day, finally capturing the top position at just the right time. However, he ran into a buzzsaw into Palma, who never lost the look and rolled to a 235-212 win over Hughes, good for his first JBT title, and the 3rd for the successful Palma clan!
Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division. Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!
Big thanks once again to Brian Casaus and the whole Roswell crew for another terrific job hosting our event. Over $1,500 in scholarships was awarded to a near-sellout 91 bowler field!
