SILVA SANTA FE
champs Sam Cuevas & Pablo Guss
Sam Cuevas wrapped up an unbeatable weekend with a second win, while Pablo Guss tasted victory for the first time, in exciting JBT NM-TX action at Silva Santa Fe.
The scratch finals, which featured bowlers from four states, opened with Santa Fe's Jeremy Medina defeating Colorado's Nathan Shock 206-140. The next match was a classic, as Medina left a short count on his fill ball, allowing Arizona's Michael Cross to strike on his fill ball for a 224 tie. Cross then struck on his rolloff ball, while Jeremy washed out, giving Cross the win. Cross rode that momentum to a 236-165 win over Stephen Gaucin to reach the title match.
Top qualifier Cuevas, the previous day's winner in Espanola, found himself in a dogfight against Cross, who was fighting hard for his first victory. However, a ninth frame open by Michael proved to be his undoing, and Cuevas stayed solid for a 206-190 win. Sam thus becomes only the third bowler in JBT history to win two JBT titles in one weekend. Not only that, but with scholarship bonuses from Ebonite and Etonic, Cuevas won over $750 on the weekend. Not bad!
Lacey Shelton, who won a rolloff over Derek Archuleta for the final stepladder spot, then rolled a 215 game to win round one of the finals over Annabeth Greigo (212) and Elizabeth Romero (204). Weston Marton, who had a terrific debut weekend, then came up with a 222 game to beat Shelton (201) and Seth Jaramillo (206). Santa Fe resident Pablo Guss then took advantage of the home cooking by rolling a 245 semifinal game to defeat Marton (211) and John Stomp (204), and advance to the title match.
Chris Schreyer had absolutely dominated the qualifying rounds en route to being the top seed for the first time. However, he was unable to get lined up on the championship pair until the late frames, and Guss took advantage for a 246-214 win, and his first career JBT title.
Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division. Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!
Big thanks to Delphina and everyone at Silva Santa Fe for another terrific job hosting our event, which awarded over $1,900 in scholarships!
