ANTELOPE LANES

champs Jeff Spiesman and Justin Givler

Jeff Spiesman and Justin Givler survived and captured JBT titles in exciting Arizona Conference action at Prescott Valley's Antelope Lanes.

After a normal cut, our survivor format puts an even number of bowlers on a pair, with the low score on each pair being eliminated game by game until only one survivor remained, creating do-or-die situations all throughout the house.  In the scratch divsion, fifteen survivors were whittled down to six.  In those matches, Jeff Spiesman eliminated Matt Herbert 211-158, Chris Weyrauch eliminated Cameron Smith, while Greg Garbera's 247-238 win over BJ Baker eliminated neither, as BJ survived in the 'lucky loser' round to create the four semifinalists.

The semifinals proved breathtaking, as Baker ran the last six strikes to stun Weyrauch 219-216, while in the other match Spiesman filled 19 in the tenth for a 190 tie with Garbera.  Jeff survived the one-shot rolloff 10-7 to advance and create an all-lefty title match.

Baker's amazing JBT career is well documented, but Spiesman is awfully tough in his own right (or left), and showed no fear against BJ, rolling the stronger game in a 224-197 win, for his 3rd career JBT title.

The handicap division was whittled from 24 semifinalists down to eight.  In those rounds, Jeff Goad, Riley Dempsey, Kyle Frederick, and Michael Row were all eliminated.  With four bowlers left, Givler eliminated Mike Sorce (the last of a large group of Antelope bowlers to do quite well), while Cotten defeated Sandy Truman, to set up the title match.

Both bowlers flat out struggled in the finale, on lanes that weren't that easy to begin with on a modified lane condition.  The match wasn't decided until the tenth, when Cotten, the handicap points leader, hooked past his 4-pin spare attempt, handing Givler a 171-166 win and his second career JBT title.

Josh Shoup was positively impacted by Impact Bowling, winning a $50 scholarship in the Impact Challenge, held at every Arizona handicap event.  Josh Ebert also gave the home crowd something to cheer about as he fired a 300 game in teh qualifying round, easily the high game of the day.

Big thanks to everyone at Antelope for another top notch job hosting our Tour in our annual visit to Northern Arizona.  76 bowlers shared in almost $2,000 in scholarships awarded- want in on the fun?  Come on out to the next JBT event, it;s as easy as that!
