BUENA LANES (Sunday)

champs Matt Jones & Devin Moody

Matt Jones ended a long slump with a title, while Devin Moody aced his way to hos first win, in exciting JBT action at Ventura's Buena Lanes.

James Hawkins, who won a two-frame rolloff just to make the cut, blasted through the semifinals up to the #5 seed, and then opened the scratch division stepladder finals with a 267-183 win over defending all-conference Bowler of the Year JR Monteith.  Hawkins then beat JBT rookie Shaun Morad 256-201, giving Hawkins over 1000 pins his last four games on the challenging Viper pattern.  Jones then stopped Hawkins in a surprisingly low-scoring semifinals 182-167 to advance to the title match.

Jones has been off to a very slow start in 2008 after capturing two titles in the Tour's fall swing, while his opponent, top seed Kyle King, hasn't been doing anything slowly, having already amassed more top 5 finishes in one season than anyone else in JBT history (are you kidding me?!).  However, King struggled for the second straight day on the championship pair, and Jones made the shots he needed to for a 218-188 win, the 3rd title of his JBT career.

Brad Hansen opened up the handicap division stepladder finals with a squeaker of a 184-180 win over Kirk Chui in round one.  Hansen then rolled by Robert Smith (not that one, but who knows what his future holds!) 242-176, and stayed red-hot in a 226-193 win over Brandon Turner, who is having a fine season, to reach his first career title match.

Top seed Devin Moody has been focusing more on his tennis lately, but you wouldn't know it from his outstanding bowling on this day, essentially sweeping everyone else out in straight sets.  It was more of the same in the title match, as Hansen slowed down and Devin took advantage for a 221-164 win and his first career JBT title.

Our female bowlers have made quite a mark on JBT lately, and the trend continued again, with the tournament's two highest games coming from girls- Kaitlin Mayall's 299 and Caycee Landers' 289 effort.

Huge thanks to everyone at Buena Lanes for their incredible hospitality over a very busy weekend.  87 entrants shared in over $2,400 in scholarships awarded at the event- want in on the fun?  Come on down to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
