SO CAL DOUBLES
champs Ken McElvaney, Mark French, Ricky brown, and Eddie Sayles
Four champions were crowned, two of them first-time winners, in exciting JBT So Cal Doubles action at Mira Mesa Bowl.
Eddie Sayles and Ricky Brown climbed the handicap ladder for the win. They began with a 173-162 win over the father-daughter team of Brittany and Arno Kolatzny. Eddie and Ricky then got by Tyler and Derrick Boscarino 184-166, and followed with a 183-173 squeaker over Josh Shoup and Kaitlin Mayall to reach the title match.
Top seed Lana Lycan teamed with Forrest Holland's mom, Debi, to lead the field, putting Mrs. Holland in the unique position of having a chance to beat her talented son to the JBT winner's circle. However, Debi and Lana struggle din the finale, while Ricky and Eddie put together a late four-bagger to win the game 212-179 and capture their first and second career JBT titles respectively.
An extremely talented scratch finals opened with Devin Bidwell and JBT alumni Mason Sherman team for a 248-228 win over repeat Doubles finalists Anthony Stevenson and Gary Burke. The father-son duo of Scott and Johnnie Englehart then came up with a big 279-182 win over Devin and Mason in round two. In the semifinals, the lefty-righty combo of Jeff Spiesman and Jared Lawrence beat the Engleharts 208-183 to advance to the title match.
Top-seeded portsiders Mark French and Ken McElvaney had been at or near the top of the leaderboard all day, and engaged in a fun yet exciting title match with their good friends and long time competitors Jeff and Jared. In the end, matters where left to Spiesman, who needed to double in the tenth for the win. After a flush first strike, Jeff's second shot went light and didn't carry. The resulting win was the 4th for French, and a very-long awaited first for the relieved McElvaney.
Big thanks to John Balla at Mira Mesa for being one of the biggest supporters of junior bowling on our whole Tour, and for hosting a packed event which awarded over $3,100 in scholarships. Want in on the fun? Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
