GLENFAIR LANES
champs Kalyn Washburn & Steven Cheatham Kalyn Washburn and Steven Cheatham each made a bit of JBT history in exciting Arizona Conference action at Glenfair Lanes. The scratch division bowled on a challenging condition and used the exciting 'PBA' format, featuring a cut to the top 16 followed by best 2-of-3 matchplay. Top seed Cameron Smith dominated qualifying, averaging over 240 after a 167 start to easily gain the top seed. He then dispatched #16 Marc Burris in round one. It was a mostly chalk round one- a rarity- as 7 of the top 8 seeds advanced, with #4 Chris Varholdt being the lone upset victim-- to Washburn. In the round of 8, Smith came back from a game one loss to beat #8 Randy Cote 2 games to 1. Washburn squeaked past #6 BJ Baker 226-224 in the decider to win her second round. Kyle King beat #10 Mike Armstrong 2-0, and #2 Greg Garbera rounded out the action with a 2-1 thriller over #5 Chris Weyrauch, 195-194 in game three. Semifinal matches were also exciting, as Washburn defeated Smith 235-191, and King escaped from Garbera 213-201 when Greg suffered a heartbreaking tenth frame open. The title match against King meant that to win the event, Kayln, who had already beat the day's dominant bowler in Smith and the Tour's active title leader in Baker, but the hottest bowler on Tour in Kyle. Showing no fear of that tall task, Washburn stayed in control of the entire title match, beating King 224-167 for her first career JBT title. Newcomer Justin Booker opened up the handicap division stepladder finals with a big 252 game, defeating Anthony Tripi (203) and Kyle Frederick (191). Rebeca Reguero then blasted a big 273 in round two, and needed almost all of it to get past great efforts from Rane Lacona (257) and Booker (221). Kyle Chambers came up with the big score in the semis, a 257, and he beat Reguero (223) and points leader Daniel Cotten (162) to reach the title match. Top seed Steven Cheatham had already broken two long-standing JBT records: the high individual game with handicap (345) and the 8-game total pinfall with handicap (+513), a record which had stood since 1999! Some reeeeally good lessons and some new equipment made all the difference, and he finished off the dominant day with a 234-208 win over Chambers, good for his second career JBT title. Over $2,000 in scholarships was awarded to the 85 bowler field. Thanks to Di and the whole Glenfair crew for their usual great job hosting our events. Want in on the fun?
