LEISURE BOWL (Saturday)
champs Kyle King & Seth Jaramillo
Kyle King made it two in a row in the NM-TX Conference, while Seth Jaramillo tasted victory for the first time, in exciting JBT action at Leisure Bowl.
King took the long route, winning four matches to climb the scratch stepladder. He began by doubling in the tenth frame to squeak by Allie Ijams 187-183. Ashley Belden was up next, and that made for some history as it was the first time in a looooong time that two females made the scratch finals on the same day. However, that history was tempered as Kyle came up with a 223-182 win to advance. The semifinal was another nailbiter, as Stephen Gaucin gave King everything he could handle. However, when Gaucin threw a 7-count split in the tenth and then only got one on the fill, that allowed Kyle to only fill 20 pins instead of double for the win, and he did just that for a 212-211 win, advancing him to the title match.
Top seed Justin Medina conquered the challenging lane conditions to grab the top spot for the finals, and engaged in a tough battle with King. The well-bowled match took a bizarre turn when Medina fouled in the 8th frame (on a shot that struck), giving the match to Kyle. However, King, on a four-bagger, responded by going 5-1 in the next frame, to again bring the match up for grabs. Kyle recovered well though, striking out from there for a 217-181 win, the 8th title of his JBT career.
Taylor Quintana almost matched King's ladder climbing theatrics, beginning with a 245-210 win over Andrea Jaramillo. Taylor then rolled past veteran Janeyl Carper 238-221, before knocking off a second- unrelated- Jaramillo in the semifinal, Brianna, by a 234-204 margin.
Amazingly, in order for Quintana to win the title, she'd have to get by a THIRD unrelated Jaramillo- top seeded Seth. In the match, Jaramillo came out firing, while Quintana remained strong but a little off her previous torrid pace. In the end, Seth hung on for a 233-205 victory, and his first career JBT title.
Big thanks to Judy Sybertz and everyone at Leisure for their usual top notch hosting job, we appreciate all the hospitality (and breakfast burritos!).
